And it makes no sense... I can just pick up the peices.

More on City Year.

The idea is that for a year, you devote yourself to City Year and it's public works projects. They target, as I mentioned, the late teens-early twenties set. People who are young enough to be fairly easy to influence, who might be drifting at this point of their life, trying to figure out what they want to do.

City Year 'encorages' those who join the program to live with their fellow City Year members.

Every morning at 6 am, I see the local cell out in the park, doing exersizes. They do this for about two hours, at which point they go off to do... whatever they're doing that day. A few days ago, I saw the leader of that group make a girl do jumping jacks until she puked.

City Year participants are discoraged from talking to anyone who isn't in on their thing, unless they are giving the Official Speil.

Okay, yes, they're doing good in the community.

Know who else had his people helping in his community?

Jim Jones.

For those of you who don't know who that is, back in the 70's, Jim Jones got a bunch of people to commit suicide by drinking poisoned Kool Aid after killing some government guy.

There's just something about City Year that smacks of Cult and Wrong.

Maybe I'm just being weird.

You don't have a lot, but it's all that you've got

There's a girl with a dog on 4th and Pine. She dresses like all the teens who hang out in the park across the street, like a punkette. She kinda smells a little, and she's too thin.

She comes out to the corner every day and she plays the violin.

The music is beautiful. Classical stuff.

She sleeps in the park across the street, like a bunch of other teenagers. I know this because I see her on my way home at night.

Sge doesn't go to any of the shelters. She's not allowed to bring her dog becuse she doesn't have it licensed as a Service Animal. She can't afford to feed them both AND pay for the licence.

This has been our guilt trip for the day.
